‘He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” ‘ John 7:38
When Jesus says stuff like this it can really seem weird. I mean, imagine your hanging with Jesus and he says something like, “out of me will flow rivers of living water?” I’d be like, good stuff bro — you ok? You get enough sleep last night? You eat some bad pizza? What’s up?
If you’re at church or around Christians for more than a few seconds, they are going to recommend reading the Bible. The problem with reading the Bible for many people is how weird and obscure it can be.
I mean, some of it hits really good right away. Stuff like, Psalms, Proverbs, James and maybe some stories in Daniel or Jonah. Good stories, good reads, makes sense.
However, when you dive into stuff like “rivers of water” out of you — it gets a little weird. It’s weird even for me.
So, what do you do? What do I do?
I first read it with a pure heart. A pure heart means to me that I’m willing and interested in learning. I want to know what this book is going to speak to my soul. I not only want it but I need it.
So, I read the verse over a few times and then the chapter to get better context. Give it all time to marinate. Reading the Bible shouldn’t be a sprint, it’s definitely a marathon.
When I read “out of my heart will flow rivers of living water,” it makes me curious. I want living water flowing out of my heart. I want others to have a drink of the water I’ve got. I want my water to be PH balanced too. I want that Essentia vibe water.
And so Jesus is basically saying the more of him you receive, the more you’ll be able to help others.
The world is hurting. They are thirsting for answers, energy, hope, faith, healing and everything in between. What if we took on enough of Jesus to overflow in these areas. The overflow out of us becomes the need and wants of others.
Jesus is saying, Go and get out there. Get out into the world and help people. But, before you do, make sure you are filled up with me. Jesus is the only one who can fill you up with what people really need.
I remember years ago, I was living with a friend. This friend of mine was so generous and kind. He was so generous and kind, he constantly hosted people at our house.
He cooked for them, encouraged them and was constantly positive. However, after a good long while of this, I remember him telling me, “I feel like my friends are just using me?” To be honest, he was wore out. His energy was drained.
He was trying to do so much for others but what I noticed was he wasn’t getting filled up. His own well of generosity, kindness and love was dry and because of that — he wasn’t in an overflow mode.
That’s what we have to careful of in life. Are we helping people out of our own strength or out of God’s overflow? I don’t know the answer for you but it’s a good question to ask.
Wherever you may be today — fill up with what God says about you so that you can distribute the overflow He has for you
