STOP FOLLOWING YOUR HEART, DO THIS INSTEAD
‘I, the Lord , search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give every man according to his ways, According to the fruit of his doings.’ Jeremiah 17:10
‘“ But I, God , search the heart and examine the mind. I get to the heart of the human. I get to the root of things. I treat them as they really are, not as they pretend to be.”’ Jeremiah 17:10 MSG
The pure honesty of God is riveting. If you are not 1,000% self aware of your life, God will quickly remind you with a verse like this.
You ever have someone say, “follow your heart”. Yah, you probably shouldn’t do that. Then they say, “really? I shouldn’t follow my heart, that’s bad?” I’d say, “yah, your heart is fn evil.”
I’d probably get a terribly awkward look from them or even you. But then I’d have to remind them of the following verses.
‘“The heart is hopelessly dark and deceitful, a puzzle that no one can figure out. .”’ Jeremiah 17:9 MSG
‘For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. ‘ Matthew 15:19
Ok, so yah, our heart is pretty f’d up most of the time. That is what the orginal verse (Jer. 17:10) is saying. God is like, “hey, you think you’re awesome. You may think you’re serving me and giving me your time. However, I see what you do. I see what you say and I see WHY you do it.” Bottom line, we are full of ‘cuss’ all the time and need to get our priorities right.
I suck at life and need Jesus. Instead of being led by my heart, I need to be led and believe what God says in the Bible. If Faith pleases God, that is what I want in my life (Heb. 11:1) period.
A verse like Jeremiah 17:10 is a tough verse for us because only you and I know what is really happening under the hood, in our heart. My prayer today is that we continually ask God to search our heart. Clean out what doesn’t need to be there, add the things that do.
I know some of these words come off as pretty harsh. But honestly, it’s just honesty. God is giving us pretty clear instructions of what works. The more we do those things, the better version of ourselves we become. Ultimately, the longer you wait on this, the longer the best version of yourself lies dormant.
So, stop pretending. God knows your BS. He knows your little tricks of what you think makes yourself look good. That may feel demoralizing at times but what is really happening is something amazing.
God is like, “I just want to kick it with you. Not the fake version of you. The one I created. The one who smiles awkwardly or isn’t very good at life. Yah, that’s the one I’m looking for. I created you just the way you are. You are my perfect miracle.”
Let’s pray:
Jesus help me to be comfortable with you. Help me to be myself with you, so I can become more of what you have for me. I need to rest in you. I need to hang with you more. Less of me, more of you. Thanks for your patience. Thanks for the victory in this area. Please keep searching my heart. Please keep me aware of what I can change. I love you. Amen.
