I PROTESTED — WHAT DO I DO NOW?

‘Put your heart and soul into every activity you do, as though you are doing it for the Lord himself and not merely for others.’ Colossians 3:23

I opened Instagram this morning and watched more clips of police brutality. I also watched videos of racist monuments being torn down and huge gatherings of solidarity around black lives matter. I mourned and celebrated with each breathe.

There seems to be so much happening all the time it’s hard to keep up with it all. Even as police have made thousands of arrest since the death of George Floyd — Breonna Taylor’s killers are still walking freely. No one has been charged.

When justice isn’t served right away, you can feel a loss of momentum. We’ve had protests like this before (not at this scale), but they have happened. What I’m trying to remember is to plot a longer time frame course.

This is a significant moment for those like myself, who are white — carry the burdens of our brothers. Hold their arms held high in battle just as was done for Moses. The weight they have endured must become OUR weight. I’m more hopeful than ever that MORE white people will join and serve our brothers and sisters. Don’t wait — act.

I want to camp right here — on injustice. I want to pitch my tent for the year and lean into the discomfort. I am choosing to not lose hope during this year but to press on and put courage in others.

I am choosing to use as much energy as God has given me against racial injustice. This is a choice not just for me, but my family. This is a stand for my brothers and sisters who are hurting. It’s also a stance for God and for the creation He made. I must do EVERYTHING I can, not for the pleasure of man but the approval of God. His people — his beauty — because black lives more than matter, they are God’s sons and daughters.

This is going to be a long journey — I suggest you do your part and plot your course. This (below) timeline of events really helped shape my long term perspective. Maybe it will help to shape yours.

I’m seeing lots of reports of white people joining the protests because it’s the “cool” thing to do. I really hope this isn’t so. It goes back to WHY someone is protesting. For me, yes, it’s because of my black brothers and sisters but even more so because they are SIGNIFICANT in the body of Christ.

I find it also interesting that during these protests masks are required. I get it, Covid-19 is looming and active. I just wonder how many would not be there if they showed their true face.

It’s ok — time will tell. I believe the right people with the right voice will be calling in the streets and in the country, wide and far, coast to coast — let freedom ring. I see a miracle brewing.

The world needs black voices, black leaders and black innovators. What a wonderful world I can see when these voices are unlocked and allowed to be free. That is a world I want to help create. I’m hopeful.

I also listened to these 2 podcasts today. They are fantastic — beautiful perspectives.
