HOW A CALL FOR HELP TRANSFORMED MY DESTINY
‘And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the Lord Shall be saved.’’ Acts 2:21
Maybe a week or so ago, I wrote about Benny Hinn (You can read it here). Soon after our dinner, Benny reached out to me again to come watch one of his television tapings. I reluctantly obliged and went.
To be SUPER honest, he was asking me to drive nearly 2 hours on a Friday from LA to Orange County to watch him TAPE a television show. A show I could give 2 F’s about. I did make the drive — coping the 2 hour drive with copious amounts of weed.
This was the start to many more great hangs with Pastor Benny.
On one of these occasions, he asked me a terrifying question — “why don’t you come work for me?”
The first few times I brushed the question and said, “I’ve got a great job (which I did). Why would I want to stop working with celebrities and work for you?”
He then gave me some schpeel about the “hand of God” on my life and all that sort of sutff. I wasn’t really having any of that at the time — so I moved on.
Then one day — it hit me. I had this thought, probably a God moment — and the thought was this: “what if Pastor Benny doesn’t ask you to work for him again — what would you do?”
For some reason — I took that moment VERY serious.
The next time I saw Benny — he asked me the question again, “why don’t you stop working up there in LA and come work with me down in OC (aka Orange County, California).”
I responded and said, “well Pastor Benny, I do drugs — drink and would hate to have you walk into my hotel room with blow and girls in there.”
His response was — “can you stop?”
My response was — “I can try?”
That was basically the interview process with him. I did ask him if I could think about the offer — to which he agreed and said, “take your time.”
This was when I “made the call”.
I called Michael Koulianos who at the time was working for Pastor Benny and also married his oldest daughter Jessica.
I called him because we had a pretty good and real dialogue about church, ministry, drugs and all of that sort of stuff as well. If you don’t know Michael — check him out. His testimony is bananas 🍌.
I felt like we had a good connection about this sort of stuff and he could give it to me straight.
So, I called Michael.
The main thing I asked him was, “is Pastor Benny for real when he is asking me to work for him?” I had to make sure it wasn’t just some ploy. I had to be sure that if I quit my job — I had a good job to get into.
This call to Michael was a sincere call for help. I knew that darkness was chasing me but I also knew that I couldn’t just quit my job and go work for a preacher. Benny’s offer HAD TO BE 100% percent in my mind.
Michael confirmed Pastor Benny’s offer and said, “yah, he’s good for it.”
That was all I needed to go back to Pastor Benny and say “yes”.
The call for help can look like so many things. However, calling for help is one of the greatest things anyone can do. This call that I made to Michael — utterly transformed my entire life.
There is not many times in your life you can say that — but this one — this one for me — changed my f’n life. Michael, if you get a chance to read this — thank you. Big time move.
If you are scared to ask for help — I beg of you — F’N ask. Get the right people around you who you can ask. People who will give it to you straight. People who are not afraid to tell you the truth. The realest of the realest.
‘And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”’ John 8:32
One last thing.
If you’re searching for “truth,” chances are you know what to do — you’re just scared to make the decision. That has been something I’ve noticed throughout life. Usually, when I don’t want to do something — it’s the very thing I need to do — I MUST do.
Don’t be afraid to lean into the unknown. It’s scary AF — but it can also be the key to unlock the “truth you know” WHICH CAN set you free. That’s a deal I want to take as many times as I can.
Truth is the most valuable thing we have. Let us economize it. — Mark Twain
